An extraordinary session of the WIPO Assemblies ended on May 8, following which the candidacy of the new WIPO Director General – Mr. Darren Tan (Singapore) was approved.
The candidacy of Darren Tan was determined by a vote of 83 Member States of the WIPO Coordination Committee, which was held at the headquarters of the Organization in Geneva on March 4, 2020.
The votes were distributed as follows: 55 votes of Member States for, 28 – against.
The new CEO will take office on October 1, 2020, with a term of office of 6 years.
Since 2015, Darren Tan has been Head of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS).
Darren Tan will be the fifth Director General of WIPO.
