The medical company Karl Storz (Germany) became the owner of the 100th patent for industrial design. This is the third eurasian patent owned by a German company – an international enterprise for the production and sale of endoscopes, instruments and devices. Over the year, the demand for Eurasian design patents has doubled.

Eurasian patent No.100 was published day before in the database of the Eurasian Patent Office (EAPO), the administrative body of the Eurasian Patent Organization (EAPO), which unites eight countries of Eurasia. The issued patent will be valid on the territory of seven member-states, except of Turkmenistan. Karl Storz has patented the appearance (form) of a medical monitor in the EAPO countries, an application for a patent was filed by the applicant on May 30, 2022. From the filing of the application to the issuance of a patent, 4.5 months passed. After the applicant submitted all the necessary documents, the examination was carried out as soon as possible.

The Eurasian System for Patenting Industrial Designs has been in force since June 1, 2021. During this time, applications for registration of industrial designs in the territory of seven countries of Eurasia were submitted by residents of 14 states, including China, the USA, Germany, Canada, Japan, Turkey, Finland, Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary and others. The Russian Federation is the leader in filing applications for a patent for an industrial design. For a year and a half of the system’s operation, more than 240 applications have been submitted.

The Eurasian system of patenting industrial designs gives the applicant the opportunity to protect the original appearance, recognizable design of their products on the territory of seven states with one patent. The demand for the issuance of a Eurasian patent for an industrial design is growing every month: if from June 1 to September 30, 2021 we received 31 applications for 86 industrial designs, then for the same period of the current year there are already 81 applications for 179 industrial designs. Thus, there is a two-fold increase in the number of applications filed and industrial designs filed,” said Grigory Ivliev.

The Eurasian Patent Organization (EAPO) was established in 1995. The members of the organization are 8 states: the Republics of Azerbaijan, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Russian Federation, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. Official language is Russian. The headquarters of the EAPO is located in Moscow.

The main task of the Eurasian Patent Office (EAPO), which administers the regional system for the protection of IP objects, is to accept applications and issue Eurasian patents, valid on the territory of the member states of the Eurasian Patent Convention (EAPC). EAPO accepts eurasian applications for inventions and industrial designs; performs searches, examinations and all other necessary actions in relation to these applications. Based on the results of the substantive examination, the EAPO issues eurasian patents and publishes information about them.
